Movies that Matter - Film Screening

Movies that Matter is a film festival based in the Hague. Recently, they celebrated their film festival from the 24th of March until the 1st of April.

If you missed their film festival: Fear not! You can attend the screening of the film “Theatre of Violence” on the 23rd of April FOR FREE in KRITERION!

Theatre of Violence tells the story of “sharp and flamboyant lawyer Krispus Ayena. He is leading the way in a fascinating, complex examination of the essence of justice. Ayena defends Dominic Ongwen before the International Criminal Court. Ongwen is a former commander in Joseph Kony’s Ugandan Lord’s Resistance Army. But Ongwen was himself kidnapped and brainwashed by that same army when he was only 9, and so the question arises: is he a perpetrator or a victim after all?

If you have followed LJM II this academic year, you may recognize this tragic story from your final essay topics. Read more about the movie here

The movie will start at 19.15, and you can buy your tickets on the Kriterion website (here), and get reimbursed by TDP.

What’s the beauty of a boxplot? And why should the use of 3D-charts be punishable by law?

These questions, and more, will be addressed in our visualization of quantitative data workshop!

Held by statistics professor Johannes von Engelhardt, this interactive workshop will start off with a brief introduction to data types and basic principles of visual perception.

Then, some of the most common types of graphical representation and their respective functions will be analysed. For each type of visualization, its use, some possible pitfalls, and how to avoid them, will be determined.

Furthermore, Johannes will make use of real life examples in order to determine how to make visualizations more effective, intuitive and, yes, pretty. :))

Not only focused on theory, through this workshop you will have the chance to create and discuss your own visualizations.

DIY Initiative

In this event series, we host 2 events which can support you in setting up your own creative idea. This can be anything, ranging from a creative project such as a magazine, an advocacy group, or an small business. You don’t need to have an idea yet, as there will be time for brainstorming in the first workshop: however, these workshops will also be interesting to you if you are interested in entrepreneurship in general.

The first event is on the 17th of January from 17:00-19:00 room 2.07. The first workshop will will be of a more of a brainstorming and networking exercise, in which you will be invited to think out your idea and what your objectives are. Next to that, you will be able to meet students and talk about their experience with setting up an initiative like, such as the students who organized Periodics and Creature.

The second workshop on the 23th of January at 15:00 (room to be announced), will give more practical guidance: since you now have a good idea of what your initiative will look like. Experts on fundraising, and advice on how to spread the word about your initiative in the most efficient way will be given.

Have you always wanted to become a first aid responder? TDP will fund this entire 3-day training, you get to learn important skills, a certificate recognised internationally at the end of the course, and you become part of the UvA-wide first-aid responder. Meaning, that you will be get notified when a calamity happens at Roeterseiland campus (around 2 times a week), and you can respond to it when you are not in a tutorial or lecture, for instance. This is a great opportunity to get hands on practice with first aid which will equip you with skills that will be needed for the rest of your life! 

The first training is on the 14th of January, second training is on the 21st of January, the third training will be on the 28th of January . In order to be reimbursed and receive your certificate you need to attend all 3 sessions. So, flexibility and availability is expected on the participants side, since the last session will be announced as soon as possible.

Criteria of selection

1. Must be a first year or second year student (with preference over first year if too many second years apply)

2. Must be on campus for 3 days in a week

3. Must not plan to go on exchange during your studies

4. Must agree to have your photo put in the PPLE building and be introduced to the public in Roeterseiland as a first aider

5. Must agree to install the ‘Picasse Receiver’ app which will notify you when a calamity happens (it notifies you only when it sees that you are present at Roeterseiland)

6. Must promise to respond to calamities when you receive the alarm, apart from when you are in a lecture or tutorial

7. Write a short motivation of why you want to become a first aider (this can be send to tdp-pple@uva.nl)

This event is very costly for TDP to organize, by signing up for this event you agree to pay a deposit of 10 euro’s which will be reimbursed if you participate in the event or deregister at least 24 hours before the start of the first session. we will only proces your application after the deposit has been made.

The first is 'This is Not a Film', made by an imprisoned Iranian filmmaker about his and other artists' life under a tyrannic regime. The film was smuggled out of the country in 2015, and now its creator is yet again imprisoned. Outside of academia, he works as a freelance researcher within different data-gathering projects, mostly in the field of international development/programme evaluation. Johannes has a Research Master Social Sciences (UvA) and a PhD in Media and Communication Studies (Erasmus University Rotterdam)

Filmmaker Tea Tupajic was seven years old when the civil war in the former Yugoslavia reached her hometown Sarajevo. The scars left by the battle play an important role in her artistic work.She asked Dutchbat veterans Frank and Harm to spend a night with her. In an empty theater they see it slowly getting dark. Tupajic wants answers to painful questions, but also tries to unleash something in both men that can give her hope.

Finding housing in Amsterdam is extremely hard; especially for foreign students. For this reason, TDP is collaborating with !WOON to organise a housing workshop, which will teach you about your housing rights and obligations!

!WOON is an organisation of the municipality of Amsterdam, aiming to provide free legal advice to internationals coming to live in the city. In the workshop, !WOON will provide a range of information to help you throughout your housing experience; from moving in (how to ensure your housing offer is legitimate), to moving out (what is the required legal notice period).

Make sure you don’t miss out on this workshop, in which you will have the opportunity to speak with housing experts. Bring any questions or concerns and get to know your housing rights!

TDP x OBOV: Bystander Intervention in Professional Environments

TDP brings you a collaboration with Our Bodies, Our Voice UvA for this special career week event! This is a slight modification on OBOV’s standard Bystander Intervention workshop, including time for you to discuss actual or potential scenarios of sexual harassment in the workplace or in academic settings.

Bystander Intervention is recognizing a potentially harmful situation or interaction and choosing to respond in a way that could positively influence the outcome. We will be analyzing and discussing the different methods of intervening and applying them to real life situations, which are chosen by the participants themselves. It’s going to be a great opportunity to practice and learn from each other! ⁠’

Core topics of this workshop include:
- What Bystander Intervention is and the different methods of intervening
- Situations in which these methods of intervening could be helpful
- Strengthening assertiveness in both personal and external experiences
- Available help-seeking options and information

"Soil and Soul" with Green Living Lab

In this workshop you will get to understand what soil is, in both folkloric and scientific ways and why is it so important for us humans. You’ll also learn how to compost organic waste at home and what you can do to help the soil in your city.

This workshop will focus on the soil food web and there will be a fieldwork challenge alongside a Q&A where you will get to ask all of the questions you were curious about!

We will have a special guest for the Science segment of this workshop: Marc Siepman. Marc is a Dutch permaculture teacher, a published author and translator of international nature education books, and an expert on soil life and the soil food web. He will provide insights into the dynamic relationships and systems in the soil and discuss our human connection with the soil.Marc is keen for participants to bring a soil sample along with them to the workshop so he can explore what soil actually is with them.

Participants should collect a few spoonfuls of topsoil from a place local to them and bring it along to the workshop for a fun activity.

Bob Ross Art Therapy Session: De-stress Series

Join us for a digital workshop on art fundamentals, inspired by the scenic work of Bob Ross. Although current restrictions prevent a live workshop with paints, in this workshop we will guide you through a digital art alternative to creating artworks, easily accessible even to novices. All you need is your computer and your creativity (or at least yourself). Along with the workshop we'll share some insights as practicing artists to maybe inspire you on an art journey of your own.

This workshop is part of our De-Stress Series and is hosted by Ricardo Rivera and Sofia Romansky. Ricardo is a digital artist who focuses on character design. He studied game design for some time but is now in a gap year honing his skills. Sofia is a third year politics student who also loves art. She paints and draws, as well as works with digital media.
